Passivhaus Concept

Green Build can be defined as a way of building intended to minimize the environmental impact of a building project.  This form of building called Passivhaus was first developed in Germany in 1990, and is so called because it refers to the energy efficiency of a building.  The concept is based on the prevention of heat loss from a house thereby reducing the need to consume energy, or to use a conventional heating or cooling system.  The result is that a Passivhaus will cut a building’s space heating or cooling needs by 90% compared to a standard building.  This is just one, among other rigorous standards, that a building must reach in terms of energy saving to be classified as a pure Passivhaus.  However, we can offer the Passivhaus principles of energy efficiency on a varying scale according to your requirements.

We are encouraging our clients to use the Passivhaus method of building because this is a more sustainable and environmentally friendly system that will overall cut the cost of your energy bills.  The way we achieve this and the methods in which green build differs from standard building works, is that we use specific building materials, as well as green infrastructure during the building process.

Examples are:

• Whole house mechanical ventilation with a heat exchanger, to recover heat and produce high quality air creating a comfortable internal environment
• Passive solar building design, to make use of solar energy all year round. Even in the UK houses can be adapted and new builds designed and positioned to make best use of the sun’s path
• Building an airtight and windtight building reducing the risk of condensation and damp
• Sustainable windows and doors that have high thermal performance and are FSC certified pure timber, and we minimize the use of PVC
• Natural insulation that is thermally efficient, made of natural or recycled materials and eco dry-lining products
• Thermally efficient wall tiles that maximize the efficiency of cavity walls
• Water saving and water efficient technology for bathrooms
• Low toxic timber preservation and paint

Effectively these measures will make your home become an ultra low energy building, saving water and energy.   In turn, this will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that are produced during construction work and are ultimately responsible for climate change.  So, we believe that undertaking a green build project is a valuable step in reducing the ecological footprint.

Although green build is, at this stage, on average up to 30% more expensive than the ordinary cost of building, the difference pays back in the long run because of a huge reduction in energy bills. Moreover, it is priceless in terms of the fact that we are contributing to keeping our environment and the planet clean.
